What is a Limited Energy Technician?

A limited energy electrician, also known as a limited energy technician or low-voltage technician, installs, maintains, and repairs low-voltage electrical systems. These systems are typically used for security, fire alarms, data networks, and other low voltage applications.


They might also run fiber optic cable or coaxial cable, which are used for computers and operating controls for machinery. This type of work is crucial to the functionality of office buildings, schools, hospitals, residential structures and other buildings where instant communication and connectivity is necessary.

LIMITED ENERGY APPRENTICESHIP

About the Program

The Limited Energy Apprenticeship is a three year program. Each apprentice completes a minimum of 6,000 hours of on-the-job training and 540 hours of classroom instruction. An average apprentice works 40 hours a week with one of our contractors and attends classes twice a month. Apprentices attend day school on Fridays from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm


The apprenticeship program has six pay periods. This means that as you progress in this program, you will make more money. Currently (as of November 2024) the starting rate for an Limited Energy Apprentice with no prior experience is $17.80 per hour. All of our apprentices are considered members of the IBEW Local 575 and receive pension/retirement and healthcare benefits.


All apprentices at the Electrical Training Academy are also enrolled at Northwest State Community College. NWSCC gives our apprentices college credit for the courses they take at the JATC. With just a few extra courses, any apprentice can move to achieve an associates degree in Applied Technical Studies in VDV (Voice-Data-Video) Specialist.

  • Opportunity to enroll in your local counties Ohio Means Jobs/Community Action where they will help with apprenticeship/lab fees, as well as boots, tools, and laptop for those who are eligible

Do I Qualify?

To meet minimum qualifications for apprenticeship, applicants must:

  1. Complete an application form.
  2. Each applicant must be: (i) a high school graduate, or (ii) have a Certificate of High School Equivalency or GED, or (iii) have a two-year Associate Degree (or its equivalent) or higher. (If equivalent education was obtained outside of the United States, the applicant will be required to provide appropriate documentation.)
  3. Provide an official transcript for high school and post high school education and training. All diploma equivalency records must be submitted if applicable.
  4. Show evidence of successful completion of one full credit of high school algebra, or one post high school algebra course, or the Electrical Training Alliance’s Math Course.
  5. Each applicant must be able to work legally in the United States and provide a valid social security number.
  6. Each applicant must be capable of completing all requirements of the apprenticeship program and performing the work required of an electrical worker, with or without reasonable accommodations, including being able and willing to: 

● Safely perform or learn to safely perform the essential functions of the job; 

● Get to and from work at job sites anywhere within the geographical jurisdiction of this Apprenticeship Program; 

● Attend and successfully pass all related instruction;  

● Understand and follow all JATC Rules and Policies; 

● Climb and work from ladders, scaffolds, poles, and towers of various heights; 

● Push, pull, crawl, crouch, and work in confined spaces such as attics and crawl spaces, lift 25-50 pound objects on a fairly consistent schedule, and use various hand and power-assisted tools to install conduit, wiring, fixtures, devices, and electrical apparatus within commercial, industrial, and residential buildings.

        7.  Be a minimum of 18 years of age at time of registration

        8.  Obtain a qualifying score of 4 (four) using the electrical industry’s aptitude test    

             developed and validated by the American Institutes for Research.

       9.  Honorably discharged veterans and individuals with previous electrical work and/or 

            training experience may also qualify for a direct interview. For details, contact the JATC

       10.  Prior to being registered, applicants selected from the pool of interviewed applicants will 

             be required to pass a physical examination and a drug test.

       11.  At time of application there is an application fee of $25.00

       12. Applicants who can verify that they have worked a minimum of one thousand (1,000)  

            hours specifically in the telecommunications industry may qualify for a direct interview 

            solely by providing documented evidence. Documentations may be comprised of official  

            documents such as tax/payroll records, or notarized letters of experience from prior    

            employers. Documentation must be sufficient, and satisfactory to the JATC.

       13. Applicants who can verify that they have worked a minimum of two thousand (2000) 

            hours specifically in the telecommunications industry, may qualify for Direct Entry. An 

            absolute minimum of 2,000 hours of telecommunications work experience must be 

            proven to meet this qualification. No other form of electronic or electrical 

            experience/training or construction experience will be given credit. Documentations 

            may be comprised of official documents such as tax/payroll records, or notarized letters 

            of experience from prior employers. Documentation must be sufficient, and satisfactory 

            to the JATC.



Applicants who meet all basic requirements will be interviewed by the JATC. Apprentices will be selected in the order of their final ranking.


 The recruitment, selection, employment and training of apprentices during their apprenticeship, shall be without discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, or sex. The applicant must meet the minimum age requirement. The JATC does not, and will not, discriminate against a qualified individual with a disability because of the disability of such an individual. The sponsor will take affirmative action to provide equal opportunity in apprenticeship and will operate the apprenticeship program as required under applicable law and lawful regulation issued thereunder.

This Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) will accept applications 24/7 year-round. The applications will be processed weekly, new accounts may take up to 72 hours for approval. 


The application process can take up to 2 - 3 months to complete. There are several steps involved: 

  • an online application
  • an aptitude test
  • an in-person interview
  • the selection process

  • All accounts will be approved by our office during normal business hours
  • You will receive an email letting you know your account has been approved, please follow the directions to continue completing your application


 2. Pay the non-refundable $25.00 application fee.

  • You can apply for multiple apprenticeship programs at once
  • Applications must be completed within 90 days


3. Submit (by email) an official high school (preferred), college, or GED transcript. This transcript must come directly from your school or university


4. For military training proof, an official copy of a DD214 must be uploaded or submitted


5. You will be notified via email that your application is complete

APTITUDE TEST

The Aptitude Test consists of two parts:

Part 1

   Reading comprehension, which is 36 questions with 51 minutes to complete the exam. 


To study for this portion of the test, it is recommended that you read information and have the ability to recall what you have read either by answering questions or having someone quiz your memory..

  • Or if you wish to purchase a Reading Comprehension course online with a discounted rate you can go to SkillsPrep.com - You will need to create an account and register with Portsmouth Electrical JATC


Part 2

   Algebra and Functions, which is 33 questions with 46 minutes to complete the exam.

   You will take a short break between the Algebra and Functions test and the Reading    

   Comprehension test.


To study for this portion on the test, it is recommended that you review Algebra 1 only, nothing higher. If you are concerned with your knowledge there are study materials on the internet. 

  • We offer a free Math Test Prep Course each Tuesday from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at Pike County CTC 175 Beaver Creek Piketon, OH - you can call ASPIRE Pike County to register @ 740-289-2282
  • You can go to Khan Academy online - Pre-Algebra, Algebra Basics, Algebra
  • If you wish to take a Math Tech Course  online with a discounted rate you can visit SkillsPrep.com - You will need to create an account and register Portsmouth Electrical JATC


 You will be scheduled for an aptitude test and notified via email.

  • If you miss your aptitude test for any reason, you will have to reapply.
  • Aptitude tests are given 4 times a year
  • You will be notified via email of the aptitude test date and time, it is the applicants responsibility to read and reply to all emails
  • This test is scored on a 0-9 scale. To qualify for further application process steps, you must achieve a score of 4 or higher
  • You will be notified via email on the results of your aptitude test (pass or fail) 
  • This test can only be taken once every three months for all IBEW/NECA related programs. If you have taken the test for any other IBEW/NECA Program within the last three months
  • You should arrive 15 minutes early from your scheduled time. Please allow yourself enough time for travel and delays. You can park one the east lot or the West side lot. All testers will need to enter the building on the East side on the ramp door. 


Applicants with bona fide Electrical Construction training and work experience may qualify for an interview solely by providing documented evidence verifying a minimum of two thousand (2000) hours in the electrical trade. This means that you will still have to sit for the aptitude test, but you will not have to pass in order to move on to the interview portion of the application process. APTITUDE TEST

If you pass the aptitude test, you will be scheduled for an in-person interview and will be notified via email of the date and time.

  • Interviews generally happen every three months and will occur on a weekday during normal business hours.
  • If you miss your interview for any reason, or do not respond to the email, you will have to reapply.

You will be scored on your interview and that score will be sent to you via email. Interviews are scored by our committee members on a scale of 1-100. This score is then placed on our ranking list for apprentice selection.


When we select apprentices, we will do so right off the top of our ranking list starting with the highest interview score.


Your interview score will remain on this list for two years. After the two years from your most current interview, if you are still interested, you will need to re-apply.


We cannot tell you where you rank on the selection list, but we will gladly discuss all further options with you if you have any concerns.

To be eligible for re-interview you must meet on of the following criteria: 

  1. After ninety (90) days from the date of initial interview with the JATC, I have gained at least 450 hours of work experience in the electrical construction industry
  2. I have completed two of more post-secondary, industry related classes, Foundations for the Trades

You must be able to provide documentation of the criteria you are requesting an re-interview for.


Steps to follow to request a re-interview:

  1. To re-interview you will need to email office@eta575.org and request a re-interview. 
  2. Once the JATC has received your request, a re-interview form will then be sent to you to fill out
  3. Fill out the re-interview form, sign, date and send it back to office@eta575.org
  4. Once we have received your form, with all documentation, we will process it and

Apprentices selection are made as needed based on industry needs. Classes will typically start in the fall of each year.


If you hope to be selected, you should apply for the apprenticeship program as soon as possible to ensure that your interview score is on the selection list by the time the committee decides to select.

  • The number of apprentices we select each year depends on industry need. This means we hire as many apprentices as we have jobs for.
  • If you are selected, you will be notified via email. Once we reach out to you, you will only have 48 hours to accept this placement.
  • If you are not selected, but are interested in the electrical industry, please consider re-interviewing
    • To re-interview, you must wait at least 90 days from the date of your last interview. During that 3 month window, you must have completed 450 hours of industry-related work AND taken two industry-related continuing education courses (CPR, OSHA 10, Algebra, Blueprint Reading, etc.) Documentation of both these things is required to request a re-interview.

TRANSITIONING MILITARY

That’s right! During your apprenticeship, you’ll earn while you learn. A great alternative to sitting in a lecture hall for 4 years, and you’ll be earning money on day ONE! 

Even better, since these apprentice programs are approved by the federal government, you can use your GI Bill benefits to supplement your income while learning and honing your chosen craft.
